Alex Storey (11D) who represented the North West playing Table Tennis in the Sainsburys UK School Games in London. Alex’s team came 5th overall in the competition. Well done Alex!

Ian Smith (11H) who won a rapping competition at the O2 Academy in Liverpool last week. Ian won a cash prize—happy spending!

Following their performance at The Brindley Theatre last week, the RHS Dance Company are going on tour, performing at various venues throughout the North West over the next few weeks. Good luck.

The Year 11 boys football team on winning the St Helens Cup. The boys beat Hope Academy 1—0 in the final. Well done.

Former Pupils are 'Elected'

Congratulations to former pupils Sophie Robinson and Paul Lynch who have both been elected to St Helens Council in the current local elections. Cllr Robinson is the new Councillor for Windle while Cllr Lynch now represents Moss Bank.

Not enough young people are actively involved in Politics, so they are setting a superb example. If you are interested in political issues join your local party and get involved.

On Monday 30^th April the dance students will perform their examination pieces as part of the Dancemania 2012 Showcase.

The show takes places at the Brindley Theatre in Runcorn and starts at 7pm. Tickets are available directly from the theatre box office or school.

Yr10 Mock exams will begin week commencing Monday 30th April and will last all week. Pupils will be on study leave for that week only, this means any pupil not in an exam or does not need to attend coursework catch up can go home.

A copy of the Mock exam timetable will be sent out to you when we return to school after the Easter Holidays.

Controlled Assessments in English and English Language

Dear Parent

I am writing to provide important information about Controlled Assessments in English and English Language as the first round is about to begin. Controlled Assessment now accounts for 40% of your child’s final grade.

As you are probably aware, many GCSE subjects are now obliged to do Controlled Assessment instead of coursework. Controlled Assessment, effectively, means doing coursework in exam conditions and was introduced to combat plagiarism and external assistance.

All English / English Language Controlled Assessments will be done in class over a series of lessons on computers. Special pupil logins provide appropriate blocks on the internet and other banned resources. We strongly believe that this is the best way to maximise our pupils’ chances of success. However, if you or your child would prefer the response to be written by hand, please inform the class teacher to discuss and arrange this.

In one way, Controlled Assessments put additional pressure on pupils because they now need to prepare for a piece of Controlled Assessment in the way they would for an exam. As opportunities for redrafts of the same piece of work have gone, they need to get it right first time. With this in mind, I am sure you will be interested in helping to ensure that your son or daughter is fully prepared for each assessment.

I enclose a timetable of all assessments for the year for your information. The ‘Dates for teaching and assessment’ column gives a clear indication of times of the year when assessments are taking place. Your child will be told their exact dates in advance of each assessment.

I would also ask for your co-operation in ensuring your child is in school on assessment days. Catch-up sessions after school are available in circumstances where there is an unavoidable absence, but they are not ideal from an administrative or educational point of view.

Official Opening of LFC Education Centre : 13-09-11

Liverpool FC Manager Kenny Dalglish was the guest of honour at the official opening of the LFC Academy Education Centre at Rainhill High School today. The new facility forms a central part of a new partnership between two organisations, which has seen the school designated as the preferred supplier of educational services to the Academy.

John Pout, Rainhill High School Headteacher, commented “We are delighted to launch this partnership. It goes without saying the prestige of Liverpool FC makes it a great honour for us to provide this service to the club. This coupled to the high quality of the education provided by Rainhill, makes this a very high quality partnership. Our students have made the LFC Academy players very welcome, and they have fitted in very well. Even those students who are Evertonians will recognise that this is great coup for the school.”

Phil Roscoe, Head of Education and Welfare at the LFC Academy said: "Over the past 18 months we have been impressed with the high level of teaching and pastoral care provided to our boys at Rainhill. It made good sense to us to make the relationship between the Academy and Rainhill more official and we look forward to developing that partnership in the coming years."

As a result of notification of strike action by the NUT & ATL the senior team have conducted a risk assessment. The conclusion of this is as follows:

The school will be closed for students, other than those going on pre-planned trips.

The closure of the school to students does not affect the presence of staff who are not involved in the strike.

Health and Social Care

Last week a group of year 11 and year 12 students visited St Ann's primary to deliver a afternoon of food and textiles workshops to 70 reception and nursery children as part of Arts week at St Ann's.

Pupils took part in this as part of their health and social care coursework; they planned out the activities, organised all resources and taught the pupils themselves. I am very proud of their achievement, they were an absolute credit to the school.

Year 11 did a fantastic job at creating pizza faces with children and ended the day with a tasting session of fruit smoothes. Whislt year 12 ran a textiles workshop and got each pupils to design and create their own t-shirt based on under the sea.

St Ann's pupils really enjoyed the day and staff were so pleased with what the pupils have done that they have invited us back to annually take part in their arts week.

Rainhill 3 Vs De La Salle 0

A comfortable win in what has been an outstanding season for this age group. Desperately unlucky to lose in a penalty shoot out in the Merseyside Cup Semi Final 3 weeks before, the lads were eager to win their first trophy as a year group.

The boys started qucikly, completly dominating possession, continuing to play the passing football they had become renound for throughout the season. Even on an extremily poor surface, Ranhills midfield took over, with Liam Moran and James Burns completely pulling the strings. After early chances were spurned, Matthew Bailey was on hand twice to tap in from close range to put rainhill 2-0 up with only ten minutes played.

Then as De La Salle began to get to thier feet, Bailey struck again, this time though from 30 yards in stinging fashion, flashing into the top corner of the De La Salle net with the keeper left completely helpless.

Rainhill then began to make changes, ensuring that all squad memebers got in on the occassion yet Rainhill contiued to dominate.

The second half was much the same with Rainhill having all the ball, yet the hard work had been done in the first half, and on this hot and humid day, Rainhill could now enjoy the afternoon knowing that their first trophy was on its way.

The lead was nearly increased as Justin White, Liam Moran, Rob Schenck and Ryan Mitchell all went close yet 3-0 it remained. With 7 minutes to go the teams assitant manegar Ross "superfly" Higham was thrown up front and nearly had an instant impact, rising at the front post to head just over the bar. A fantastic performance to end what had been an outstanding season.

Rainhill launches professional dance company

FROM stage, to screen, to celebrity reality television shows, it seems the British public can’t get enough of dance at the moment.

Now quick stepping students at a sixth-form are being given the platform to experience what it takes to become a top performer.

Rainhill Media Arts College has launched a professional dance company, with the goal of nurturing talent in styles ranging from ballet and tap to hip hop and street dance.

Twenty youngsters taking the BTEC National Diploma Dance course will create contemporary dance performances and commercial theatre pieces.

To secure a place in the company youngsters must audition in front of a panel of professional dance choreographers, performers and teachers.

They will be heading out to St Helens twin town Chalon Sur Saone in the spring to grace a French dance festival. Coaching tips have come from the school’s artist in residence, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts graduate, Josie Cork.

Lou Aylward, head of dance at the school and artistic director of the company, said: “The goal is to give sixth formers professional experience of the life of a company dancer.

“We’ll be producing high quality, entertaining and innovative performance pieces for private and public events.”
